CI/CD is one of the most frequently heard acronyms in software projects. But what exactly does CI/CD mean for a software project, and why does it matter so much? In short, it is a working discipline that automatically tests code changes and moves them safely into production.

What is CI/CD?

CI/CD combines two complementary practices: Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment.

Continuous Integration (CI)

Code written by developers is merged into a shared repository at frequent intervals. With every merge, the code is automatically built and run through tests. As a result, bugs are caught the moment they appear rather than days later.

Continuous Delivery / Deployment (CD)

Code that passes the tests is automatically made ready for release (continuous delivery) or pushed straight to production (continuous deployment). Manual, error-prone deployment steps disappear.

How does a CI/CD pipeline work?

  1. A change is submitted to the code repository (commit/push)
  2. Automated build and dependency preparation
  3. Automated tests (unit, integration, security) run
  4. A package (e.g., a container image) is created
  5. Deployment to a test/staging environment and verification
  6. Automatic deployment to production after approval

Benefits of CI/CD

  • Faster delivery — New features ship in days or hours instead of weeks.
  • Higher quality — Automated tests catch regressions early.
  • Lower risk — Small, frequent deployments replace large, risky releases.
  • Fast recovery — Quick rollback to the previous version when something goes wrong.
  • Consistency — The same repeatable deployment in every environment.

Common tools

Tools commonly used in the CI/CD ecosystem include Git-based repositories; automation platforms such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, and GitHub Actions; Docker for packaging and Kubernetes for orchestration; and automated testing and code quality tools.

How it relates to turnkey development and managed services

CI/CD makes it possible not only to develop software but also to operate it sustainably. At Jekirdek, we build our turnkey projects with a CI/CD discipline, and as part of our managed service, we roll out updates safely and without downtime. That way, delivery becomes a continuous, secure flow rather than a one-time event.
